Sensory Setup

Here is our Sensory area ready to go!
We have one table dedicated to sand the other water and a third smaller table (see above) that gets switched out almost daily.

Ribbon Streamers- Music and Movement

We decided to make music and movement ribbon streamers. It all started because my friend Angela gave Mikey a present wrapped in this beautiful blue thick satiny ribbon. I knew I had to use it for something so I came up with this super simple and fun craft.

Materials Needed:
Ribbon
lighter( for sealing the ends of ribbon)
Thread
Hair band
Scissors

Directions:
1. Cut your ribbon to the desired length
2. seal both ends of the ribbon by lightly gliding the lighter past the ends you will see a change in the ends. This prevents fraying and will make the streamers last longer.
3. Fold the ribbon over the hairband and sew closed. I used a sewing machine but you could easily do this by hand.
4. Enjoy playing spinning and dancing with your new ribbon streamers!

I made these for Kaia and Mikey
I used the lighter to seal both ends and then folded some ribbon around a hair band and sewed it closed
For the classroom I left the streamers simple. I want them to be more durable and to last through many uses by many children. I don't recommend using the iridescent sparkley ribbon I used for my kids streamers for a classroom it is really pretty but frays quickly even when its sealed.

Bell Sticks- Musical Instruments

Materials Needed:
Bells
Ribbon
Stick of some sort (I used an old pinata stick and an old PVC pipe)
Saw for cutting
Drill
Lighter (for sealing ends of ribbon)
Sand Paper

Directions:
1. Cut the stick you are using to the appropriate sizes (I cut mine 6-8 inches)
2. Use a drill to drill a hole through one end of the stick
3. Sand the bottoms and over the area where the hole was drilled to make sure everything is smooth and safe
4. Cut ribbon to the length you like and seal the ends. Lightly pass the lighter over then ends you will see a change this prevents fraying and makes the finished product last longer.
5. Pass the ribbon through the drilled hole. Tie knots on each side of the hole to keep the ribbon in place.
6. Attach bells I put the bells close to the stick end not towards the bottom of the ribbon because I did not want anyone to get hurt while they made music
Of course they pulled the tissue paper off of all the sticks made from the pinata stick. I expected that. I considered it part of their fine motor development. Plus it meant I did not have to do it!
